If the Internet wins the Nobel Peace Prize, do we all get a trophy?
Several nominees for the prestigious 2010 prize, which was awarded last year to President Obama, surfaced on Wednesday in news reports.
If the Internet wins the Nobel Peace Prize, do we all get a trophy?

Several nominees for the prestigious 2010 prize, which was awarded last year to President Obama, surfaced on Wednesday in news reports. Among them: “The Internet” and, separately, several of the Web’s creators, including Larry Roberts, Vint Cerf and Tim Berners-Lee, who is pictured above.

If one of those guys wins, it’s pretty clear who would receive the award. But if the Internet wins? No one seems to know what would happen then. Maybe give it to Al Gore?

The Internet’s credentials aren’t bad. Recently, it helped speed relief efforts to Haiti and organized protesters in Iran. Wired Magazine in Italy, which has been advocating for the nomination, says it spreads “dialogue, debate and consensus.” That and, as Chatroulette showed us, porn.

The truth is that the Internet is designed as a fairly neutral platform – and it’s used both for good and ill. That’s perhaps why the nomination has sparked so much debate – ahem – on the Internet.

Some Web sites, including the tech blog Mashable, have asked whether Wired Magazine in Italy is raising the issue to try to get publicity. One commenter on that blog wrote: “This is a really dumb idea for a bunch of smart people … I think it is just a publicity stunt on Wired’s part.”

Others say it’s silly to give the Nobel Peace Prize to a thing instead of a person. The who-will-accept-this-award thread is becoming a running joke online:

“If the Internet wins the Nobel Peace Prize, I really hope a cat accepts the award,” Twitter user @joyengel wrote, in an apparent reference to the goofy LOLcats meme.

The Internet has an unprecedented amount of competition. There were more Nobel Peace Prize nominees – 237– this year than ever before, according to news reports. Not all of the Peace Prize nominations have been made public. Lots of people, from professors to government officials, can submit nominations for the prize.

The prize winner will be announced in October. If the Internet wins, who do you think should get the prize? And do you think it would be deserved?

Thanks to CNN.com for the information.

Ke$ha has really made a statement in the music world, especially with her newest album Animal! Although her lyrics talk about some really risky business, Ke$ha actually has a background you would never have labeled her as. For instance, did you know when she was in high school at 17, she was enrolled in a big-time International Baccalaureate program and was going to go to Columbia University to study psychology! That’s pretty impressive, but she quit school and says, ” she wanted to move back to L.A. and pursue my music.” She was one of the lucky discovered singers. In L.A. she met Dr. Luke who had been looking for a strong female artist with an amazing voice and a totally different style. Ke$ha easily fit into that category. Dr. Luke was also working with Flo Rida on a track.

Remember the song Right Round?? Flo Rida asked if she wanted to be the female voice in his song, and of course she accepted! Right Round rocketed to number 1, selling more than 636,000 downloads its first week out! Next time you hear that, you’ll know the female voice that made the song as good as it is. All in all, she worked really hard to be where she is today; she truly defines the saying “sieze the day” and took every opportunity that came along. Now, she’s one of the hottest female singers who everyone has on their iPod, mp3, etc. She says, “When I first heard my voice on ‘Right Round’ on the radio, I started screaming and crying,”

Ke$ha says-“I may seem kind of crazy, but behind it all I have my s**t together. I’m working really hard to make this happen and it’s nice to see that hard work pay off. I mean, three years ago I was stealing canned vegetables from the dollar store to survive. Now, I’m on a No. 1 song, working on my album, and have a little change in my pocket. To be able to take my mom out to dinner is the best feeling in the world.”

Although her outside appearance makes her seem crazy, inside she’s just like the rest of us. Congrats to Ke$ha for making her dreams happen, which will hopefully inspire us to reach our own!

While I was checking out some websites on the internet, I stumbled across a site called enliten.me (which directs me to www.enlitenonline.com). Now, this site isn’t just your average site. They have everything from blogging to a clothing line. They have one line of clothes out right now and their new spring line is in the finishing stages of being printed and ready. They even had their site written about: found here. The shirt designs are pretty sick and they definitely show their creativity. The shirts range from $22-$25 and are in many sizes (Small- XL). What I like about the shirts that they make is that they all have little characters to add more spice. These characters not only ‘brighten’ up the shirts, but they also create a fun atmosphere for the site. Now, while on the topic about the site, the blog portion of the site has a section for fashion, sports, and movies. Another for international music and technology and the other group is for video, art and miscellaneous. The variety of categories allow readers to enjoy all aspects of the site, giving you a fun read. The vibrant colors and characters really draw your attention to the site.

For those of you who never seen this site, here is a little background for you guys:
The site was created by Alec Nelson,20, Kris Nelson,22, and Spencer Groshong,23. They all attended Churchill High School and it was there that these three guys started the idea for this site. I was able to get in touch with Alec Nelson and talk to him about his site. Here is what he told me about the site and the company.

Alec Nelson-

When did you guys start Enliten?

We started the company because we have all been interested in clothing and starting our own brand. We have been talking about it since the high school days, and have been in the process of starting our company for a few years. Our high school also had a probably above average ‘computer graphics’ program that spurred interested in the Adobe software suite we often use (Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, etc). In high school, we were frequent contributors on school spirit tees, yearbook, etc. This continued on to college with designs for fraternity rush and special event shirts. Spencer and Kris were part of another attempt at starting a clothing company about 2 years ago that didn’t end up working out but provided some experience.

How do you guys come up with the designs for your t-shirts?

We try to incorporate different aspects of Eugene, Oregon and the Northwest through our shirts as well as our blogs. For example, for our BigFoot tee in the Fall line the background is very similar to the Eugene City Seal. We also look to incorporate popular culture and conspiracy theories many times mashed together with our designs and concepts.

Each t-shirt has a ‘character’ attached in some way to its design or concept. We believe these characters to be one of our main ways of differentiation. These characters are called ‘the elite’. Also, instead of having a hang-tags, our shirts come with collectors cards of these characters each designed based on the character itself. So for instance, our ‘mason’ character card is modeled after an Illuminati playing card. We’ve noticed that most people normally don’t pay attention to or throw away regular tags, so we like to offer something different. The characters we use reference the designs on the shirts and have historic connects to real people involved with the concepts of the shirt and many times the ‘age of enlightenment’. We do also offer stickers for sale based again on the main designs of the shirts.

Do you guys have any other clothes lines coming out?

We just talked about what we are going to be doing for our Winter Line, which would be offered sometime early 2010. Since we are still small and not sure of how popular our brand will get, it will be still small, probably just offering male t-shirts & stickers again. We will however have a few more designs available. Again, we hope to further our expansion to get to sweatshirts, hats, jackets, pants, shoes, etc…. We are also excited in the possibilities our characters have for toys as well as the collectors cards themselves. We are working on a business plan to get potential investors. Right now we are formed as a LLC and are in the process of being carried at local clothing stores at least.

What does your site offer to your viewers?

Our site offers more than just clothing. We each have our own blogs focusing on unique topics. Alec handles fashion, sports and movies; Kris does music, technology and international; and Spencer does art, videos and other misc things he finds. We see these blogs as a source for other people to be entertained and learn something interesting at the same time. Also, it is a way of giving something to our supporters for free.

Although, We do consult with each other on the major designs & concept decisions, each individual also has his own personal strengths that help with the project itself. Spencer does a majority of the design work. Kris is in charge of a lot of the writing (business plan, etc) as well as web design. Alec, me, does marketing online getting our name out there. So far our site has been viewed by at least 30 of 50 states and over 16 countries. Alec’s blog itself has over 30,000 hits this year.

A better written and more concise explanation of this project is in the ‘About Us’ section of the website, but here it is too:

Alluding to the dichotomous concepts of spiritual and intellectual
wisdom, the term ‘enlighten’ carries much historical weight ranging
from the Age of Enlightenment to its connotations in religion.
Enlitenonline.com draws from and updates these underlying historic
concepts of ‘enlightenment’ to comment on popular culture.

What else is there to your site besides the clothes and blogs?

Along with a clothing line, this collaboration of websites and blogs will become a database for all questions, thoughts and concerns regarding such popular topics as fashion, music, art, videos, technology and sports.

Additionally, our subsequent clothing line keeps theme – premeditated, aesthetic designs that reassess popular culture. Moreover, reoccurring character motifs look to guide viewers to their own, personal conscious awareness of the popular culture around them.

Enlitenonline.com will attempt to ‘enliten’ its viewers while providing the opportunity for others to ‘enliten’ one another as well.

So take a look at what we have to offer and offer something of your own.

‘Enliten: Open your mind.’

Earlier in the year I got in touch with Erin Hench from Messiah Women’s Soccer Team again. I asked her about her team’s season and how things went. She gave me a little write up and I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did!

-Erin Hench

I could tell the season was going to be a good one from the start. Coach scheduled some tough games. If I remember correctly, Ithaca, Washington and Lee, and Johns Hopkins were all ranked, and we ended up playing really well against them, winning 4-1, 5-0, and 2-0 respectively.

So, of course we were pumped at the beginning of the season. We fought through some tough games, our closest being Lynchburg which was a 1-1 tie. The tough part is to stay excited towards the end of the regular season when we start playing conference games. You’re stuck in the middle between being excited for soccer starting and being excited for the NCAA tournament to start. At that time, however, there’s nothing to get super excited about so you just have to push through instead.

We ended up winning our the Mid-Atlantic Conference title which put us in the NCAA tournament. This year was not like the rest, however. My two years experience told me that the road to the final four was easy. Little did I know, those were just two odd years. This year was closer to the reality of how the tournament is supposed to be.

The first round was the only round that went the way I was expecting. We beat Farmindale State 6-0. The rest were going to be nail-biters. We had to go on a beat Endicott 1-0, Otterbein 1-0, and Hopkins 3-1 in order to make it to the final four. It was such a relief to end that game against Hopkins, knowing we had at least another week together since we’d be on our way to San Antonio the following weekend.

The NCAA took good care of us. We flew out Wednesday or Thursday, I can’t remember. We had two days of practice before the first game. Let me just say, though, that it was COLD! We were expecting to go from cold PA to perfect Texas. Boy were we wrong. I was freezing! It flurried during the first game, and I found out later that it was the first time it snowed there since 1980-something. Some of the younger kids in the stands hadn’t been alive to see snow. Crazy, huh? And of course the day that we left it was back up to 70 degrees.

I can’t complain, though. It was a great trip for us. I loved spending time with the girls and it was so nice to have the guys’ team there to support us and for us to support as well. The first game was way too cold for us to watch since we had a game the next day so we were all huddled in two hotel rooms around a computer listening to find out what was going on. The second game we were able to watch because we had just finished our own game. It was so great to have the support of them and all the family members and even classmates who flew down to be a part of the experience.

Ok, to backtrack a little, I’ll fill you in on the final two games. The first was against TCNJ–The College of New Jersey. We have a little history with them that I can’t remember specific details about which years and whatnot, but I know we’ve each knocked each other out of the tournament at different points in the final four. So we’re rivals to say the least. That’s why it felt so good to win that game. They were great competition. Washington University at St. Louis was good too. I believe this was their first final four appearance. It was fun for me personally because my friend from home goes to school there. (Don’t tell anyone, but she was secretly cheering for me and my other Messiah teammate who we went to high school with as well.) Anyway, we scored about a quarter of the way through the game. I’m not sure if that was good or not for my nerves. On one hand you feel good about being up by a goal. On the other hand you’re nervous the entire game because one goal is not that big of a lead. Fortunately, that’s all we needed. The final whistle blew and that’s all that mattered. It was pretty exciting to say the least.

To read more about the season, you can visit our school’s athletic page at www.gomessiah.com.

The great thing also is during our conversation Erin talked to me about how she liked our site! She had nothing but kind things to say about boxofmess.com and for that Erin we say thank you! (below)
I also really like your site. I’m impressed at how professionally done it is. I just took a computer class and we did a brief unit on website design and I have no idea how you did all that. I also like how it’s a mix of every topic as well as a mix of professionals and upcoming amateurs. There’s just a good balance overall of everything that you put on there.

Thank you very much Erin! Good Luck in your final season at Messiah next year!

The film industry made history Sunday night when Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win a Best Director Oscar, for her work on “The Hurt Locker,” an Iraq War drama that also took the Best Picture prize and four other awards.

The tense story of Army bomb-disposal experts in Baghdad, made for a mere $11 million, upset the popular favorite, “Avatar,” a roughly $300 million sci-fi epic that was widely praised for its advances in 3-D technology and artistry. “Avatar,” the new all-time box-office champion, has sold $720 million in tickets in the United States. “The Hurt Locker,” though considered the most successful of Iraq-themed films to date, has drawn a mostly art-house audience, barely cracking $20 million worldwide.

“Avatar” once seemed untouchable for Hollywood’s top award. But in a move designed to bring in more viewers to the telecast, Motion Picture Academy brass doubled the Best Picture field to 10 nominees — and the complicated voting dynamics broke in favor of the smaller indie film.

Bigelow was only the fourth woman nominated for the prize. When the time came, the envelope was opened with dramatic flair by Barbra Streisand — herself the director of three feature films — who looked at the contents and announced, “The time has come.” Accepting the award, Bigelow called it “the moment of a lifetime.”

Arlington native Sandra Bullock won Best Actress for her role as a tenacious foster mom in “The Blind Side.”

The 1982 graduate of Washington-Lee High School — which also spawned Oscar-winning siblings Warren Beatty and Shirley MacLaine — is a longtime Hollywood favorite for her roles in profitable romantic comedies. But she found her first real critical acclaim this year for playing Leigh Anne Tuohy, the real-life Southern belle who took in future Baltimore Raven Michael Oher when he was an all-but-orphaned street kid in Memphis.

“Did I really earn this or did I just wear you all down?” joked Bullock, 45.

Jeff Bridges won Best Actor for playing a grizzled, alcoholic country singer in “Crazy Heart.” The Hollywood veteran took his first trophy for his fifth nomination, 38 years after his first for “The Last Picture Show.”

Still wearing the long hair and beard of his character, Bad Blake, Bridges, 60, brandished his golden statuette with a “Whooo!”

Thanks to the Washington Post for the info.

Kadeem Jack is a competitive forward that brings energy to the floor and sparks his team with hustle plays. He is a good looking prospect that is more athlete than basketball player at the moment, but showed some very good instincts around the rim. Althought the 6′9 Senior has a lot to work on, he is an intriguing prospect and has many offers to prove it. We caught up with Kadeem to talk about his recruiting and the season.

How’s the season? We started off a little hyped and won a couple of big games. Then we struggled a little but now we’re back on track.

What is your current list? Arizona, Arkansas, UConn, Georgetown, Providence, Miami, Florida, Kentucky, UCLA, California, Seton Hall, and West Virginia. All of the schools have offered except for Kentucky.

Discuss the rumors that Arizona is in the lead? I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite. It’s the only school I have visited. As of now they kind of have the edge over other schools.

On his visit to Arizona? It was a great experience. The fans and the whole environment was great.

On other possible visits? I’m not really sure yet. I’m still in the process of figuring it all out.

On when he will commit? I will most likely commit to a school in April.

If Jim Calhoun’s Health troubles scare him? No, it does not scare me at all.

On what he is looking for in a program? I am looking for good coaching, as well as good development.

Thanks to Kadeem for the interview.

In this premiere episode of the third season of “The Celebrity Apprentice,” Donald Trump divides the celebrities into men versus women and instructs them to choose a team name and in a surprise twist, Trump asks them to choose the opposing team’s project manager. For their first task they must run a New York City diner.

The team who brings in the most money at the diner, including tips, wins. It isn’t long before the celebrities’ egos clash as they compete to see who will be the first celebrity to face Mr. Trump in the boardroom and hear the words “You’re fired.” Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump Jr. also star.

At this point, our money is on Sharon Osborne. She looks fiesty as usual!!! But let’s see who else gets nasty in the first episode.

Boxofmess.com will like to tell you…to do the Powerade Dunk Contest!

Yes, Powerade is looking to send an amateur dunker to serve as a celebrity Judge at the POWERADE Jamfest. This is the annual dunk-off at the McDonald’s High School All-American game. Now, some of you may ask… who were some people who were a part of this annual-dunk off? Well, some of the past contestants were LeBron, Carmelo, and Vince Carter.

The process is very simple you dunk…you film…you upload. Be creative with your dunks and put your own style into it. Once you film and dunk, the next part will be you uploading the video onto poweradedunk.com. An important thing to keep in mind is that you don’t have to dunk on a regulation rim. Some of us may not be able to reach it, I speak for myself, or find it harder to dunk on a regulation rim. You can use Nerf Hoops or add spice to it and use a trampoline. Important Thing: BE CREATIVE. NBA Star Chris Paul (New Orleans) is judging the online contest with POWERADE.

The contest is open until March 11

If you are chosen as the winner- you will get a prize package valued at $2,100 that will send you to the McDonald’s All-Star Game to serve as a celebrity judge for the POWERADE Jamfest.
Below is the full prize details:

The prize includes round trip coach airfare from a major airport near the winners’ residence to Columbus, Ohio for the winner and one (1) guest. Prize also includes hotel accommodations for two (2) consecutive nights in a standard, double occupancy room, an American Express® Gift Card valued at $500.00 for food and other travel incidentals, POWERADE merchandise from the Jamfest event, and transportation to/from Jamfest to the hotel. Approximate retail value of Grand Prize: $2,100.00.

The current judging panel consists of college football legend Archie Griffin, former NFL star and Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George, ESPN College Football analyst Kirk Herbstreit, and ESPN analyst and football great Cris Carter and more.

If you do not want to submit or attempt a dunk, you can also visit the site, poweradedunk.com, where you can view and vote on the past Decade of Dunks from former JamFest winners like LeBron, David Lee, Blake Griffin and more. Those stars were throwing down those dunks when they were just 17-18 years old!

If you are interested in this contest, go practice your dunks, film it, and upload the video! Also, after you upload the dunk video on the site, put it on youtube and send the link to boxofmes2244@aim.com and we will show your dunks to our viewers!

If you have any questions contact us at boxofmess2244@aim.com and we can get your questions answered right away!

Now, go make a “MESSterful” dunk.

Check out these dunks at POWERADE Jamfest
