When people think about New York City basketball and Harlem they think of a guard who has flair and is dazzling. Kareem Canty is exactly what the doctor ordered and he is leading the pack in a new era of NYC guards.
Kevin: Kareem, I am sure you hit the summer circuit hard. Where have you been playing, both AAU wise and recreationally?
Kareem: The summer was fun, I played at the Reebok All-American Camp and the NBA Top 100 Camp. AAU wise I was in Las Vegas, Arizona, and DC.
Kevin: Do you feel any pressure about going out and showing people that you can win it all this year, being such a highly ranked player in the country?
Kareem: I feel like I have a lot of pressure on me, but I personally want to win a title because I never did before. I can deal with the pressure, I work better with my back against the wall. I am from Harlem, USA Ha Ha.
Kevin: So, I’ve noticed that your nickname is NuNu, Where did you get the name from?
Kareem: My aunt started calling me that when I was little and it stuck since then.
Kevin: I will deviate from basketball a bit with this next question. Can you name your favorite food and your favorite spot to chill in the summer?
Kareem: Favorite food is easy Barbeque chicken and yellow rice that always does the trick. I like to just hang out with my friends when I am home because with my busy schedule I do not see them much.
Kevin: As far as the NBA goes, are there any players that you try to emulate in the skills department?
Kareem: I like to watch Derrick Rose and Chris Paul, they are top point guards. I also work out with Kemba Walker when I have the opportunity, that is my main man.
Kevin: Is there any other state that you feel are rivals to New York as far as basketball talent is concerned, if so where?
Kareem: In terms of basketball talent New Jersey is probably pretty close.
Kevin: Nice answer, do you have any quotes that you like to live your life by?
Kareem: No quotes really, just focused on improving life for my grandmother and my father.
Kevin: If you had 10 seconds on the shot clock and Derrick Rose was guarding you, what would you do?
Kareem: I would hit him with the in and out crossover then see what the defense does but I would have to score.
Kevin: Any breaking news or info on what school you would like to attend?
Kareem: Right now I am undecided but I am looking to go back to the east coast.
Kareem is one of the nation’s top point guards and many people are looking forward to seeing him develop. One thing is for certain, he is out there representing Harlem basketball players. Kareem is looking forward to a great season at Westwind Prep and we wish him good luck!
