TONY EXPLAINS WHY HE LIKES EACH SCHOOL THROUGH HIS TWITTER (ARTICLE BELOW).
Washington= theres nothing like putting on 4 my city, and everybody want me to stay home and bring bak uw.Some people say i bleed purple.Lol. Villanova= 4 guard offense, there no better offense for me to play for. I love coach wright and malik wayns is my dude. Pause. Love philly. Syracuse= love the big east and i loke that 2-3 zone and syracuse coaching is great. Uconn= cause i wanna play wit kemba walker and i love coach calhoun“UCONN”, exclaimed Tony Wroten on his new favorite school.
Wroten, a 6’4 Point Guard from Garfield High School in Washington, is one of the top players in the class of 2011. Not only is Tony a standout on the court but a stud on the field as he excels in both football and basketball. The dual athlete is fielding some big interest for hoops, not only on the West but the East Coast. This is for good reason though. Rivals.com’s Jerry Meyer described him as an electric athlete with great size for his position. He has the ability to take a game over at any moment. Slashing to the basket is his forte, but he can also heat up from the outside. A physical point guard, he has excellent court vision and provides a formidable presence on both ends of the court.
It seems as if every month Tony Wroten’s recruiting situation changes. Since September, it seems as if Wroten cannot make up his mind. In September, he told Adam Zagoria of Zagsblog.com that Syracuse was his favorite. Things got quiet until the month of December when Tony told VUHoops.com that his list of four consisted of Villanova, Oregon, Syracuse, and Washington. Well, that soon changed. One month later he threw Tennessee into the mix, but noted that Syracuse was in front of his list followed by ‘Nova.
But wait, the list continues to change… dramtically. In late January, per his Twitter feed, the list was once again updated. The tweet said, “OHHH BOY. a new team has made it to my top 5. 1. syracuse 2. villanova 3. UCONN 4.Tenneesee 5. washington. PS. oregon as dropped in my list.” At this point we all assumed it would come down to those five schools and nothing else would change.
Well you were wrong, but you were right. Wroten has not added any other teams. He has, however, bumped a school off the list and changed his favorite. For months Syracuse and Villanova were his top 2, but recently UConn made a large leep. Not only did they make his list, they are now his favorite. But why UConn all the sudden? “Because it’s in the Big East. I love Coach Calhoun. And I would love to play with Kemba Walker,” stated Wroten via email. As for Coach Calhoun’s healthy, he said “it’s not a scare but it will make an impact on my decision.”
Tennessee, on the other hand has come up short. The Vols missed the list along with Oregon from earlier in the year. As for no longer carrying Oregon in the list he said, “I am not interested anymore.” and as for why Washington is the only Pac-10 team on his list despite location, “No other Pac-10 school besides Washington has really interested me.” As for what he wants in a school Wroten notes he wants, “a coach who’s into the game, a coach who gets pumped, and a coach who can make me better on and off the court.” When he says a coach who gets pumped, wouldn’t Tennessee’s Bruce Pearl fit under that category? As for visits, he did confirm a visit to Villanova that went well. Along with that, Wroten was spotted behind the Washington bench when UCLA played Washington in a blowout win for the Huskies.
One interesting note that may impact Tony Wroten’s recruit is his football career, which coincides with his basketball career. “I want to play both football and basketball in college.” Despite tearing his ACL in a football injury which kept him out for the entire football and most of the basketball season, he confirmed that he, “is playing next year” and “is not scared about the injury but it will have an impact on my decision.” It seems like Tony Wroten Jr. nowhere close to making a decision. “I have no idea when I will commit. I don’t know where I’m committing yet.”
Certainly he is one of the top basketball stars in his class but could football take over as the sport he wants to play in college? Many questions remain unanswered. Is UConn the clear cut favorite? How long will Jim Calhoun stay at UConn and will it effect the chances of the Huskies landing Tony? Why did Tennessee drop from the list despite Bruce Pearl’s character and personality? Will Tony Wroten stick with his current list or will it be shuffled once again? We have no idea. All I know is Tony Wroten Jr. is going to be one of the best point guards, none the less best players, to come out of the city of Seattle.
Thanks to Tony Wroten for the interview.
