Pankey has traditionally been a player who impacted the game by rebounding, defending, and being active around the basket. He’s an impressive athlete with long arms, good hands, and a strong frame who finishes very well around the basket, runs the court, defends multiple positions, blocks shots, and more. Ashton picked Maryland over Houston and will join the Terps next season. Why did he do this? We asked him all about it.
Why did you commit to Maryland for basketball? Well first & foremost, I committed to Maryland because I love the atmosphere on campus & I know they have a great basketball tradition. Also Coach Gary Williams is a GREAT coach.
What did Maryland have over your next choice, Houston? I felt it would give me the best opportunity to be a pro. There’s more exposure & better competition at Maryland than at houston. I’ll be playing against future pros all the time so I’ll know when I’m ready.
What are your goals for your senior season? In terms of goals for the season I just want?to be a leader for my team & win the state championship. It’s a huge deal at St. Anthony’s to win one so I want to know the feeling.
Can you talk about why you left Archbishop Molloy during your sophomore season? I transferred out of Molloy following an incident in which I bought a stolen cell phone from someone but I didn’t know it was stolen. But since I was in possession of the stolen property the other kid couldn’t get in trouble especially since he lied & told the principal he didn’t know where I got it from.
Why did you choose to attend St. Anthony’s? I chose St. Anthony’s because I knew Coach Hurley would help me prepare my body for college & my?AAU coaches helped me with the transition.
What is something we do not know about Ashton Pankey? One thing u probably don’t know about me is that I like to watch cartoons(lol).
Could you send all the Terps fans out there a special message? I would like to tell all the Maryland fans that I’m going to?play my hardest & do whatever it takes to bring that title to Maryland. I can’t wait to get to college park!
We want to thank Ashton Pankey for the interview and wish him the best of luck this season.
