When you hear the name Shawn Kemp you automatically think of the one who played in the NBA. Now there is a new Shawn Kemp bursting onto the scene. He is the son of the former NBA stud. Kemp is now enrolled at Alabama and is weeks away from playing for the Tide. He has a new coach in Anthony Grant that is trying to change the face of Alabama from football to basketball. We caught up with Shawn Kemp Jr to talk about all things Alabama, his father and much more.
Why did you choose to commit to Alabama for Basketball? The reason?I chose Alabama was because everybody there was nice and made me feel at home.?Another big reason was becuase?I wanted?to stay close?to home.
What was it like growing up around a father who was a star in the NBA? Well, when?I was growing up?I didn’t live with my dad but?I was reminded every day that he was my dad. At first it was hard?to get used?to but now that I am older I’m used?to it.
How much has your father impacted your basketball career??Who else made an impact? My dad had a big part in me playing ball. He has inspired me?to become what?I am now and what?I will become in the future. Other people who have left a footprint on my basketball career?are my uncle because he always works with me, my high school coach because he’s shown me almost everything i know now, and last but not least my mom becuase if it wasnt?for her?I wouldn’t be where i am today.
Did you wrap up your career at Cherokee High School the way you wanted to? My dad went to the NBA in high school and now that they have the rule that?you can’t come out of high school?to the?NBA anymore.?I can’t exactly do what my dad did, and even if there wasn’t a rule?I don’t think I’m at the level?to go straight?to the NBA. I’m pretty sure I’ll need?one or?two years in college.
Did John Calipari going?from Memphis to Kentucky have an impact on you??I don’t think the situation would have hurt bad. I’m just glad?I went with Alabama lol.
What are the similarities and differences between your father’s game and you? There aren’t many similarities and differences between me and my dad cause we do share some of the same style of play but the differences?are that?I plan on taking a lot more jump shots than he did.
Alabama has a new coach in Anthony Grant. Since you were recruited by Mark Gottfried, will this impact your career at Alabama??I don’t think it will impact my career?to much but if it does it will be in a good way becuase Anthony Grant is a great coach.
The college basketball season starts very soon and Alabama fans are wondering just how much Shawn will impact their team. Bama looks to bounce back from a subpar year and get back into the thick of the SEC race. If it is anything like their football team, hoops fans will be in for a treat. We want to thank Shawn Kemp Jr for the interview and wish and Alabama the best of luck this year.
Note- All interviews are done through Facebook/Myspace/Email/Call/Text/Etc. All people are REAL. No fakes here!
Thanks to shawn kemp
This has to be an old interview. Shawn is at Hargrave and is no longer commited to Alabama. Mutual decision. This story was just posted Oct. 4th so they must not have known that Kemp Jr has opened back up.
You are correct. I conducted the interview with Shawn this summer. With all the construction and more important articles we decided to post this now.
