Arizona State has been one of the best programs for college baseball. This year was no exception with the Sun Devils making it to the College Baseball World Series. They eventually lost on a walk off home run to Texas. One man who contributed to their success this year and that game was Zach Wilson. Although he was a freshmen, he had some clutch hits. Wilson has a great future ahead of his at ASU and has a chance to play at the next level. We caught up with Zach recently to ask him about his career so far at ASU.
Arizona State lost on a heartbreak walk off home run to be eliminated from the College World Series. What are the emotions running through you right now? When we lost i couldnt believe it. I thought we had the game and everything going our way. It was a sinking feeling to know that our season is over and we didnt reach our main goal of winning a national championship.
Considering you hit an RBI triple to give your Sun Devils the lead in the 9th, was the loss even worse for you? The loss was just as bad. I would have traded that triple for a win in that game any day so we could keep playing.
Why did you choose ASU for Baseball? I chose ASU because its a great school and its a lot of fun. The baseball program is always top in the nation and i wanted to be apart of a team that is always that good and competative.
You were drafted by the Pirates last year in the 26th Round. Why did you choose to go to college over the pros? I chose to go to college first because I wanted to have a back up plan just in case baseball didnt work out for me. Also coming to college has helped me grow as a baseball player.
In 2007, your high school team finished #1 in the country. How did that feel? Finishing number one is always a great feeling. Our whole team felt like we were on top of the world and were ready for next season so we could go out and do it again.
You were high school teammates with now Sun Devils teammate, Ray Hanson. Did you two both choose ASU out of friendship or was it just a coincidence? We went to ASU together because it was a great basebal program but Ray didnt end up making the final roster for the year so he went and pitched at Cypress City and had a great year and is planning to give it another shot at ASU next fall.
What are your goals for your Sophomore season? My goals for next year are just to have a great time and win a national championship. I dont like to set personal goals because its a team game and i do what i can to help the team get to our main goal.
You are a California native. Why not go to USC or UCLA? I talked to USC and all the local California school but tey just didnt interest me like ASU did. Coach Murphy at ASU is a great coach and has taught me alot in one year and I probably wouldnt have learned that kind of stuff at any other school. ASU is just a better fit for me.
What was it like playing in the USA Baseball Tournament of Stars in 2007? Playing in the tournament of stars was a good experience. I played in the tournament in 2006 and 2007. It was fun facing the good pitching from all over the nation and it is always nice being considered one of the top players in the nation. It was a good time playing with friends and also making new friends.
?Zach will continue to help ASU in his sophomore year. He looks to start this year and make a huge impact on this historical program that will loose players to the draft as well as graduation. We want to thank Zach for the interview and wish him and the Sun Devils the best of luck next year!
