Now, everyone knows about Syracuse’s lacrosse team’s ridiculous win against Cornell for its Record 11 national NCAA titles. But lacrosse isn’t the only sport that has great players. Don’t forget women’s soccer! Especially with their Freshman/soon to be Sophomore, Casey Ramirez. In high school, Casey Ramirez was a key player on one of the, non-arguably, best soccer teams in the nation, The Pennington School (In 2008 Fall season, they were the #1 ranked team in the nation according to both ESPN RISE Magazine and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) with a undefeated record of 18-0). During her highschool career Casey was Ramirez was selected to the Trentonian First-Team All-Prep “A” team as a defender in 2007 and as a midfielder in 2006. As a captain, in 2007 she lead her team to a record of 19-3-0 winning New Jersey Prep “A” State Title for the fourth consecutive year, winning the Mercer County Championship, and being ranked nationally the entire season. After 4 years at Pennington, Casey left the school with a mark and her presence on the field; deciding to go play at Syracuse. The fall 2008 Season was a bit shaky for Syracuse Women’s Soccer with a record of 5-11-2 but Casey has received individual accomplishments along the way. We were able to have an interview with Casey below, check it out =).

MessGirl-Why did you choose Syracuse for soccer? What about it pulled you in?
Casey Ramirez-I liked the coach who recruited me and they also gave me the most money.

MessGirl-How would you say your freshman year went? Were you happy with it? Did you accomplish things that you wanted to accomplish?
Casey Ramirez-My freshman year went well. As a team we didnt accomplish as much as I wanted to but as an individual I did. I started almost every game and played a lot. Also my first week playing, the Big East conference awarded me the rookie of the week and I was also awarded rookie of the year by my team.

MessGirl-What are your goals (no pun intended) for next year?
Casey Ramirez-For our team to get to the Big East Tournament and to be named to a Big East Conference team at the end of the year.

MessGirl- How is college soccer different from high school soccer?
Casey Ramirez-It’s a huge part of your life. You base your classes/schedule around practices/games and it runs your social life. I missed about a fifth of my classes cause of traveling and had to wake up at 7am during thel spring to work out everyday. Instead of going out on the weekend, your sitting in with your teammates cause you have a game the next day. Your lifestyle is much different then the normal student.

MessGirl-What was the best moment of your soccer career (at any level)?
Casey Ramirez-Being recognized as the rookie of the week by the Big East conference was exciting because it was out of all the of rookies from all the colleges in the league

MessGirl-Who is the best player you have played with and against?
Casey Ramirez-Not really sure…

MessGirl-It is pretty far away, but will Casey Ramirez play professional soccer?
Casey Ramirez-No.. I’m done after college

MessGirl-Your high school team, Pennington, finished #1 in the nation this year. What do you think about that?
Casey Ramirez-Since my freshman year Pennington soccer has gotten better each year. I was really excited to hear you guys finished #1 and I’m really proud that I was apart of the development of the soccer program.

MessGirl- A lot of people love to play offense and love to score goals but What do you like about defense?
Casey Ramirez-I was actually moved to center mid at Syracuse. But I don’t really like getting the glory from scoring goals, I like winning the ball and assisting. And its less running lol

MessGirl-If it were up to you, would you rather win the game on a goal or a defensive stand?
Casey Ramirez-Doesn’t matter to me as long we win

MessGirl-Who is your favorite soccer player of all time female or male)
Casey Ramirez-Laura Rodrigez on the national team

As you can see, Casey’s freshman year went well for her and we look forward to seeing her play more in her sophomore year. Writers at boxofmess.com say thanks and good luck to Casey for her 2009 fall season.
