Alexa Carugati is one of the best defenders in the world of girls high school soccer. She also plays on the number one ranked, Pennington Red Raiders. The Senior, helped Pennington obtain an 18-0 record as well as a County and State Championship. Her soccer career does not end there though! Carugati commited and officially signed with Villanova, as did teammate, Heidi Sabatura. We caught up with Alexa to talk about soccer, school, and life.
How would you sum up your undefeated year of Soccer at Pennington? “AMAZING. It’s great to know that you are and always will be part of the first Pennington Girl’s Soccer team to go undefeated. That pretty much sums it up.”
What was it like being ranked #1 in the country? “Being ranked number one in the country was an awesome feeling and we knew we had a big target on our backs every game we played. Our team is not about the rankings, though. We just want to play our game and have fun!”
Why did you choose Villanova for soccer? “I chose Villanova for soccer because the team is awesome. I knew if I went there, I would fit in great with the team chemistry that the girls already built. I also, like the coach. He is very similiar to my club coach, so I feel the transition will be an easy one. Villanova plays at a high level that I’ve always wanted to play at, so it was the perfect pick for me. Plus it’s close and Heidi’s going with me!”
What has been the best moment of your soccer career thus far? “At Pennington…Probably winning the last game against Peddie for the State Championship. After that was done, it was great to know we went 18-0. For club…Probably placing third at Nationals this past year in Arkansas. It was one of the best experiences of my life and I’ll never forget it.”
How have Coaches Murphy and Hawkey helped your game? “Hawk and Murph are great. They are the type of coaches that everyone wishes they could have. They have taught me so much over the past four years and made me a better leader on the field! They are seriously the best!”
What was it like having your junior year ruined by injury?? “I never thought that I would tear my ACL. I had always heard about it, but I was like that’s never going to happen to me. It was probably the worst time for me to tear it, too. A lot of college recruiting was going on and I was so frustrated that I could not play. That is what motivated me to work hard in physical therapy and come back fast. I was happy that I could come back for the last few soccer games of my Junior year and get back into the recruiting process.”
What is the best part of your game? What do you need to improve on? “I think the best part of my game is seeing the field and calming the play down. Being a defender (mostly center back) I’m the last person standing there and I can see everyone on the field and the play going on. It makes it easy for me to pick out the target players and to talk to them when needed. I definitely need to improve on my speed and left foot more. I know in college I’m going to be sitting the bench if I don’t.”
Which other colleges showed interest in you? “Before choosing Villanova, I visited many colleges. The ones that really showed interest were University of Delaware, Rutgers, Bucknell, and University of Rhode Island. I visited all of them, but when I came home from my visit at Villanova, I knew I wanted to go there.”
Who is your favorite athlete and why? “My favorite athlete is Michael Phelps. He is sick at swimming and is so HOT!”
What is something most people do not know about Alexa Carugati? “I can play the piano upside down (not very well, but still)”
Alexa is heading off to a great Villanova program with plenty of winning experience on her side. She has a bright future with plenty of potential. We want to thank Alexa for the interview and wish her and Villanova good luck next season!
